They are practically useless. My windows throughout the house get extra dirty. I think oil particles permeate the air. I am hoping to redo my kitchen and move my stove so that I can have a vent over my stove that vents to the outdoors.

I don't think they do anything. My house smells like what ever I cooked last, until I cook again.

Ductless hoods just spread the grease, steam, and odors around. Less than worthless too if you happen to burn something (as if that ever happens :barnie). In my cold climate, I'd get way too much condensation on the windows & walls in the winter. Had a ductless range hood when I moved into my home, and removed it within a month. The previous owners had an electric range (the outlet was still there), while I prefer a gas range. Fortunately for me, there had been a ducted hood there before, and the opening was just covered over; so installing the vented hood was easy.

When I grind dried hot pepper or garlic, I do so under the exhaust hood, to vent the fumes outside. Likewise, I appreciate the exhaust when canning hot salsa. Wouldn't suggest trying either with a ductless.

You are a brave person, I grind mine in an outbuilding, a well ventilated outbuilding.

Major, all I'll say is we had one when we moved into the Arkansas house and soon installed a vent. Do you notice a trend here?

A few years ago. I had a small grease fire at my stove. The fire jumped from my pan into may ductless range hood and out of the top near the ceiling. Screaming and quick thinking got it out before much damage was done. Pretty scary. Yes the filter was well past cleaning time.

What's the point anyway? All that stuff you're sucking up with a fan has to go somewhere, and even a clean filter can't capture it all.

yes i see a trend.. either everyone wired them backwards or they are useless....figured i would ask,... spent a couple hours looking around think i found one with a little modification we will be able to use the duct from the microwave, if not looks like a new hole in the wall....

the only purpose i see in them is to pull the steam away from your face when cooking. since we don't cook with oil very often and rarely burn things we don't have the rest of the issues. and i don't mind how the house smells from cooking.

if i didn't want the house to smell good i'd not cook it whatever it was... we rarely cook meats and seafoods here these days. when we do they are in pots that are covered. not much mess gets out.
