Has anyone read this book, by Joel Salatin? I just finished it, and it was pretty fascinating, and quite frustrating, just hearing about the myriads of laws that he has to navigate to provide his friends and neighbors with healthy food. I'm curious what your thoughts are, if you've read it. :old

I haven't read that Salatin book, Kate. I have read Pastured Poultry Profits and Salad Bar Beef.

Joel was on a radio call-in show the other day. That's not my best forum for learning anything but it wasn't just me. He seemed rather "strident" and not exactly what I expected from reading his earlier books.

I grow food for my neighbors, so to speak. At least, they buy veggies from me. Right now, I'm somewhat concerned about my insurance :/. That industry seems to be tightening the screws on those of us who have home-owners insurance . . .

Actually from the title of your thread, I thought that we might be able to also discuss things that are immoral and fattening ;).

I actually have NOT read the book, but I had read an interview with him in Mother Earth News back in August! I was quite in awe over a lot of the things he said. I do agree with what he is doing, and I love that he is voicing what is going on that makes it so difficult... however, I can tell he is very opinionated about people in general. He was asked several questions that had nothing to do with the legalities of what he did, more so with eating choices?!

Either way, I agreed with his business for sure!

I will probably read the book... when I have the time and money for a book!

Our library doesn't have it, nor did our local bookstore. I guess I'll have to order a copy.

I couldn't find it anywhere either, so I ordered it. It's put out by a tiny little publisher.

After reading it, I've realized that I'm definitely a philosophical libertarian because it is pretty absurd how much the government mucks so many things up when it gets involved. I am a very intelligent person who thinks before she makes decisions, and really doesn't believe a single thing I hear in the media or from the government unless I've researched it myself. I think the government patronizes American citizens by treating us like we are too stupid to make decisions for ourselves - in this case, about deciding what we would like to consume. Plus, it doesn't matter what party a politician is a part of, they are all beholden to someone. I definitely like how Salatin points out the hypocrisy of the major parties.

ON the other hand...I am in a social service career, and am well aware that, unfortunately, there ARE a lot of stupid people out there. People who really DON'T plan ahead, and DON'T know how to make a reasoned choice. I'm not sure if I want to be present for what happens if the government quits taking care of people entirely.

So it definitely made me think.

And it made me more convinced that I want to be a farmer. :D

Albeit I have not read this book you make a very clear explanation of what it is about!

I like what you have to say and your point of view!

I must concur, when the help stops all ---- will break loose!

I agree with both of you... too many people are so dependent on the government to make their decisions for them, AND coddle them when they fall. They are less likely to ever get back up again though...

I know from personal experience... without going into detail... I'm related to one of those morons who wouldn't know WHAT to do if the government help ever went away. She would curl up in a ball and die! All she knows how to do it fill out paper work and receive government help for everything.

Am I the only one who believes government is blocking 'natural selection'?! Survival of the fittest seems to have gone the way of the birds?! No wonder we have serious population growth problems... most the problem are the people who shouldn't have survived HAVE and are multipling rapidly!!!! Thanks welfare!!!
