Have you ever seen this video, the sitting rise exercise to predict your death ? A few years ago I got a 9 doing this. Today, I have no idea what it was by the time I got up. I started the walking tapes and I actually did this, the pilates pushup https://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-27760/the-only-push-up-youll-ever-need.html So my plan is to lift weights, do the walking tape, try to do more of the pilates pushups and I am going to split some firewood in the mornings. The bottom video shows a different idea about the test.

I don't think it can predict death either. I know a woman with MS and in a wheelchair and when this test was shown a few years ago, she could not do the test and she is still alive. My friend in Kansas is overweight and she could not do it and probably would get 1 or 0 and she is still alive. When I got a 9 I used a hand to get up. I go down pretty easy. I am overweight, so I figured my legs could not lift because of that, but now I weigh the same or slightly lighter and I went down fine, but had to put knee down and hand. I have noticed my legs feel weaker when I am putting wood in the stove and when I get up, I am not as strong as a year or so ago. That blood clot blood thinner episode did not help. I have been off the blood thinner since first of July. I also have been in the house a lot these last 2 years, especially this year. DH had all his major events happen starting in May, so it was one hospital stay after another and taking care of him all summer. Even DS seems out of shape and pale. We are going to fix this.

I've seen this before, and found it took some practice to do it. It felt almost as much about technique as it was about strength, and when I did it regularly, my knee hurt.
I'm with you on getting stronger! I am actually underweight right now, due to some health problems. It would be nice to bulk up this winter.

That requires 2 good legs. If you were to look at my shoes, it's obvious that only the right one is involved in any work. The left is just along for the cruise. Over time, I've learned to be thankful that the left can do that. Yes, I can use the technique in the second video but it's by using the same dominant right leg each time.

Pushups are said by some to be the ultimate exercise so getting down on the floor could be seen as an important goal. I can't do pushups either. On-the-toes requires 2 useful legs, again. Otherwise, almost 100% of the body weight is shifted to only one hand. Good balance is needed along with strength to do one-hand pushups. That's too much to expect and it has been that way for decades.

So, are the pushups with the knees on the floor easier? Not really, the back is really arched! It's back problems that killed the sciatic nerve in the left leg.

I just feel lucky to have fairly good use of my arms, to be able to gain an upright position, and forward movement.

Perhaps these kind of life or death incentives are helpful. If so, great! I kind of look on my abilities to move that way.

I love your "We are going to fix this". Start out easy even if it's just going for walks. You can also do some small squats hanging on to your kitchen counter. Maybe do 5 every time you wash dishes or something.

I feel like I am not yet ready for the rocker!
Cat' , that's me, too. In a way, I'm seeking a comfortable position, 24/7. But, I'm a good deal more comfortable with exercise, frequent activity.

Where we are gonna end up, I'd better be happy with. Somehow content with my fate - it will, take mindfulness, right? Until then, it takes minding the need to keep moving.

It's like those fish that are shipped for long distances in a tank. The motivation, the incentive to keep moving had best be in the tank ;). So that the valued fish arrive healthy, it was found that putting in some catfish to keep the bottom stirred up a little was helpful.

Catfishing has become something of an emotional cliche but it takes time to adjust to a rocking chair.

Exercise is strange. DS started to lift weights and really did not get sore, so did more, and still seemed like it was no effort to him. He has been working 8 hours a day and a little bit of sore back from bending a lot. Then, yesterday he came home very sore and it was from lifting boxes off a shelf onto a cart, and then to a scale to weigh and back on a cart. Very sore in his shoulders. He worked hours on the roof bending, nailing, etc. without a problem. He stacked and split firewood for hours and did not get sore. He loads hay, weeds, mows, tills, etc. and it is no problem. Above, Mary said to hang onto the kitchen counter to do squats. I can lift barbells from the floor onto my shoulders and squat sets of 10, but cannot get up from that exercise test thing without using my hand and now need knee, and look like i am 80 getting up from in front of the woodstove and getting that way out in the garden on my knees when getting back up. I am sore this morning from the walking tape of only 1 mile. lol

You are already doing great if you can squat with weight on! Good for you. That exercise getting up from the floor takes a lot of core strength which I thought I had but apparently not. :(
