I don't feed birds regularly (except the chickens...) but my Dad does. I believe he first filled the feeders in 2004 and hasn't let them get empty yet.

If you start feeding them now, you will have regular visitors by the time the snow flies. And you might get to see some migratory birds. Be sure to put out suet when it's cold.

I was stunned to see an Eastern Bluebird in our yard today. They are not at all common here in New York anymore, and to see one in the winter is very unusual. Still, I love having a pair hanging around the feeder. They don't actually go on the feeder but hang around with the snow birds eating what the other birds drop from the feeder.
