http://adamsfarms.com/ This is my favorite nursery there flagship store is in the next town. They have best plants and trees, their food dept list what local farm the produce is from. There sign proudly states family owned. Last year they opened 4th store, which makes me wonder at what point does a group of stores became a chain? Is there a number or does it not matter as long as family runs, not board of directors? Walmart is run by family but is a chain, so are many chains. My friends grandfather started up Howard Johnson restaurant ran it till his death , that was most certainly a chain. So at what point do you go from family business to chain store ?

I worked for a restaurant for 15 years and joined them when they had 113 locations. Not public, no board, just the owner to whom I reported. Family run, even by only one man. He owned more stores than any one franchisee. Then Dunkin Donuts bought us and all that effort pfft! Then it became a "chain".
