Labelgmos.org is a group trying to get an intiative on the ballot requiring all GMO foods sold in California to be labeled but you can bet there will be a lot of opposition from Big Ag so they need all the help they can get. If you can find the time volunteer to gather voter signatures and If you can't, spread the word among your friends and in the social media; like I am doing right now. Even if you are not a Californio help spread the word anyway. This can be the foot in the door that will open the way for other states to follow. Go to the site linked below to get more information.

Sent the link to all of my friends and family who are on the Central Calif Coast. They will send it along to others. Thanks for the link. 30 years in Santa Barbara and 12 years in Paso Robles....I know a lot of organic Californians!

I have no problem with the intent of the bill.

One major problem, lawsuits will fly as the seller will say it's based on "a test" and the one selling will be suing based on "his" test. Lawyers will get RICHER. Are they going to be in trouble if they label it GMO and by chance, it isn't?

I'd rather have a bill that allows products to be advertised as they are "made", grown, processed, etc. If the product doesn't have this label, then assume it may contain something like GMO grain, etc. Example is "pasture fed beef", that beef can not be feed lot beef, or can it? Buy from local producer, then you know.

We don't even need to label the GMO products. All we neeed is for the government to allow companies to add,"No GMO ingredients" to products that qualify. At the present time they are forbidden to put that on their labels. The government, prodded by Big Ag, has decreed there is "No substantial difference" between GMO and non GMO products but substantial is a weasel word with no exact defintition. If I send a grain of GMO corn to a lab and a grain of non GMO corn to that same lab can they tell me which is which? Of course they can, with no trouble at all. If a lab can diferentiate between the two obviously there IS a substantial difference.

You really don't want to know the correct answer to this question. They will never be able to add "no GMO ingredients" unless they say "per ____ test". A lot of "organic" products would fight that label as well for they use GMO products in their organic products. Once on the label, the consumer could run a test, get a positive and sue.

Seedcorn, the present law states that no GMO may be used in a certified organic product.

I'm not sure the word "law" is accurate. I can tell you in Indiana a lot of the grain fed to "organic" animals is in fact GMO. Organic "rules" may be more accurate. I'm not sure anyone wants organic products that contain corn or soybean products in them want to see the test results. & I'm not talking about blow-in pollen. Huge difference between theory and facts. In theory, organic should not use or allow GMO products in any part of their cycle. In fact, they do.

That's part of the problem. Bureacrats come up with these rules and regulations out of thin air without having to justify them but they have the force of law. There is a local case where a man selling worm castings (worm poop) got shut down because he hadn't registered it as a pesticide even though there was neither a law or regulation requiring him to do so. Some field inspector just got a wild hair and that's all it took.

Hmmm. Worm castings registered as a pesticide? I'm wondering what kind of pests it would kill. That's just ridiculous. And there are those who wonder why over-zealous government workers are despised.

Seems the shut down was triggered by a brochure he put out on the benefits of it on a garden. He mentioned that plants grown in it show more resistance to diseases and pests. He may not have had the scientific evidence for the claim but common sense wold seem to dictate that the inspector simply tell him to take that part out of the brochure instead of shutting down his business by threatening him with a fine he could not afford to pay.
