In this morning's newspaper add from an " everyday specialty food store " or foody store ... " Painted Hills choice flat iron steak" ( I have never heard of this term for a steak before) on sale for $5.90 / lb. marked down from their everyday low price of $11.49/ lb.. Add doesn't state if it is "organic" , "grass fed" or ? . So, what part of the beef does this cut of steak come from ? Halibut frozen fillets at $12.99 / lb. marked down from $18.99/lb.. Good Belly probiotic fruit drink 2 for $6.00 marked down from $4.29 each. Organic ( ??? ) Maple syrup 32 oz bottle for $ 16.90 marked down from $ 29.99. etc. . If I was to shop at this grocer for everyday low prices, I would have to take out a bank loan. :th

Flat iron steak comes from under the shoulder blade. Just a fancier name so people will pay more for it.

Grocery store prices like that make you glad that you have a garden doesn't it? A checker at a store tried to give me "free French fry" coupons from McDonalds a couple of weeks ago, but I declined the dubious honor. I grow much better stuff than that in my garden.

I remember when we started carrying flat iron steaks at a restaurant I worked, we talked about the cut...I can't remember much now except like bay says, it's a little bit different cut which is similar to something else with a different name. And I will add that I've really enjoyed them, but NOT for $5.90 a pound!!!

I saw flatiron steaks at the market today. 9.98/lb. I just kept moving. I'm trying to remember if I've ever paid $10 a pound for anything....I'm sure I have at some point or other, but it was probably a plant.

It appears that this meat is what we used to grind up for hamburger so now the butcher can get more money from the uninformed. :th
