The first flowers opened this morning on two of my zucchini plants! Both male flowers, but at least they're starting to bloom!! :)

I have been battling cucumber beetles, and squash bugs, and caterpillars like a mad woman. I can't believe how MANY cuc beetles we have this year! Little bass turds!

Hooray!!! I just got my first flowers this morning on my straight neck yellow squash! :D Isn't it exciting?! Since they were male I was thinking of picking them, cleaning them, then stuffing them with cheese and deep frying them in a beer batter....

.... thanks to my diet I just walked away and let them be! :gig

It's quite easy, the female will have a tiny little squash under the flower and the males do not. If the females aren't pollinated those tiny squash won't grow and will brown and fall off with the female flower above it. The males are just the flower with nothing attached to them. (They're good for deep frying! )

Now I assume that I can't just go all King Herod on all the squash flowers right? Surely, my baby squash need some daddy flowers to go with the mommy flowers.

LOL, your beetle rant made me giggle!

Mmmmmm...zucchini. Think I'm going to have to mud mine in if I hope to get any this year. Love 'em grilled!
