Good Morning!
"Green Leafy Vegetables, Fruit Consumption Reduce Risk for Diabetes Mellitus."
So say researchers in a study of 71,346 female nurses, aged 38 to 63 years, who were free of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes mellitus in 1984 (the Nurses' Health Study). This chronic form of diabetes is also called insulin-dependent diabetes or type 1 diabetes. Follow-ups on the nurses' health have been made every 4 years and continues.
The recent report shows that an increase in whole fruit consumption was associated with a lower risk of diabetes mellitus in the nurses. And, an increase of 1 serving per day intake of green leafy vegetables was associated with a lessening of the chance of developing diabetes, as well.
The bad news, bottled fruit juice didn't help protect the nurses from diabetes. In fact, drinking juice is associated with an increased hazard of diabetes.
However, "If fruits and vegetables are used to replace refined grains and white potatoes, both of which have been shown to be associated with increased risk of DM (diabetes mellitus), the benefits of regular consumption of fruits and vegetables should be substantial," the study authors write.
