Interesting concept. But so far we have not had surplus. Trees are fairly new and have not produced well. Also have a large base of friends and relatives waiting for extras! If I had way more than I could use I might think about it.

I'd like to see an option for leftovers at the Farmers Market go to Soup Kitchens @ cost but for a tax donation.

It's not an obligation but would give growers the option so things that won't keep as well can still be useful and not just a loss.

This way everybody wins.

The food bank Americorp people make the rounds as the markets close, here.

I'm not sure if this can be an option everywhere. It must have to do with local health departments and their regulations.

Before this service, we and others would show up with boxes of produce at the women's drop-in center ... always felt welcomed by the staff there altho the sign in front of the lace curtains on the door clearly stated that I was not permitted ;).

Mary: at the Mountain View farmers market, there is a big food bank kind of van that accepts even the rest of that which is not sold at the slashed prices. I used to volunteer there for a friend who sold chocolates.

I loved that market, esp the Indian, Pakastani and more foods! YUM!

Nyboy, we have a group here in alameda that gives their surplus fruit to the foodbank. They also have volunteers that will go to peoples homes to pick their fruit for the foodbank.

A lot of cities and parks plant fruit trees for spring flowers. Downtown White Planes has a block planted with Mulberry trees, must have been a mix up females where planted instead of males. They do make a mess of sidewalk, but people do pick and eat the berries.
