There was a question recently about incorporating herbs and flowers in the same bed. I don't think that was answered. Heaven knows, I'm not a good garden designer! But, as a guide for a few things, I've found that About.com helps.

I first began to take About.com seriously when my wife's doctor used it to provide us with medical advice . . . .
:ep

Well, be that as it may, here's their page on Garden Design:

Garden Design, About.com

I hope it helps.

That's exactly what I've done with my little, throw anything in one spot herb garden. I have established Bee Balm, Chives, Common Sage, Russian Sage, Oregano, and Lillies and I grew Malva, Sweet Peas, Cosmos, and Allysym (2009) along with a few cloves of garlic. Everybody was happy, because I stopped growing Lavendar there--not enough drainage for it.

I have an old book called The Perennial Garden , by Jeff and Marilyn Cox that I think you guys would like. You might be able to find it at the library, and I have linked it to Amazon online.

It is heavily illustrated with the most inspiring garden photos! It really makes my wheels turn.....should I ever get it in gear! Ha.

It goes over color harmony and textures, propagation, lots of technical info on many individual plants and aesthetic considerations for your design layout, and more. It is a very practical book to have in your library. And like I said the photos are really inspiring. :happy_flower

I know! I always find myself going back to books, because I love to have it in my hand. I love to dog-ear and mark notes on the pages! Something about scouring the internet that fries my brain, then I get distracted and forget what I was looking for in the first place (although sometimes this can lead to serendipity!)
