Okay I'm trying to plan out next years garden. I know what did not work this year, no large tomatoes in the SFG. I plan on putting a couple of Husk Cherry tomatoes which didn't get too big. My peppers, cucumbers, onions, carrots did well. I will put in one or two eggplants and acorn squash on my "trellis". No squash (not enough air flow) but I have some 2x2 beds I will try. If they don't work, I'll have time to put in tomatoes (small) for later harvest. Here is an old picture of my garden

8x8 box with trellis which now has snap peas.

and my diagram. The 4x7 is new and is to the left side (not pictured).

Should I run my tomatoes and peppers in rows or stagger them diagonally? Of course everything is subject to change. lol

TIA, Melissa

BTW, the garlic and walking onions are there now and will stay until harvest next year. I plan on putting a couple of cucumbers behind the zucchini's to grow on and over the fence.

I would run the peppers in rows and the tomatoes in rows as well, making sure the tomatoes are positioned to not block the sun out for the peppers.

5 zucchini plants planned?

You must have a lot of neighbors.

I wish I could have so much zucchini that I have to give them away. I planted 10 this year and got less than 10 zucchini's to eat. This was a live and learn year.

Good for you, planning ahead! Everything looks great. I personally wouldn't devote so much space to zucchini. Why not try winter squash. Try to figure out why you didn't have success with the zukes and rectify...was it pest related? You are off to a great start- I predict great success!!

First is was, to tight a space in the SFG. With all the veggies around them, there was not good air flow. They grew great to a point, then turned to mush. I removed a lot and left 2 yellow squash which were smallish and still healthy, then I got squash bugs. They all went out. Then I tried to plant them in tires outside of my little garden, not enough water and they soon dried up. So this is my new plan. I'm pretty sure that the 2x2 boxes will not make it, but I can take them out to plant late tomatoes or something.

This is just my little garden. I share a huge plot with my family which is about 600 yards down my driveway. I plant corn for myself. LOTS of corn. Then we have okra, butter beans, green beans, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, and peppers. When I pulled my corn (feed stalks to the horse and mule) we re-plowed that area and I planted turnips, mustard, collards, beets (which did not come up?) brussell sprouts (which grow really slow) and cabbage.

BUT, I only get the corn and late greens. The rest belong to my other family. If I wasn't so greedy with corn, I could plant other things on my spot. :D But I love corn and its dual duty. I though about putting some winter squash with my corn, but I use the stalks to feed the horse and mule. I just may have to plant a few on one row.
