Someone had posted a great story and pics about a garden ministry their church has been doing for many years. Anyone have that thread handy? I couldn't find it with the search feature.

I'm thinking about growing excess veggies and, instead of having my roadside stand, giving the veggies to families that need it. I would eventually like this to become bigger and a yearly thing, with possible homesteading classes tied into the ministry.

Anyone else do this or have heard of this?

I posted about a church in our community that offers a community garden? Do you think that was it?

:thumbsup

That's a wonderful idea Beekissed! Especially thinking of those who can't garden to feed themselves, like the elderly or people in low-income housing with no space to garden.

I know when we were kids and my dad was laid off, it was my parent's big garden that kept us fed that year!

I am thinking alot of people do that as a ministry but not maybe thru their church....I give eggs to the firehall and also to an elderly couple, never thought of it as a ministry but I guess it is....I feed my family and extended family and grandbabies with my vegetable garden....you know it is important to take care of your own family first before giving to the community....I have always been a stay at home mom and when my husband broke his leg his friend would bring boxes of vegetables from his garden to us....it was greatly appreciated and I found a zillion ways to cook sqaush....we was not really in need because we have put back but it still was very apprectiated.....

Vfem, I think it might have been! I'll look it up. :)

I took the first step today and inquired at our local food bank. It is very small and only open 1 day a week. The lady told me that they were interested in having a program that would connect "gleaners" with folks who have farming/gardening excess.

I like this idea....I think folks who will come and pick their own will take it home and actually use it.

I would also like to have a food basket ministry where I could take washed and sometimes prepped veggies and fruit to the elderly who cannot grow their own. I asked her if she could get me some info on folks in the community who might benefit from this.

I also feel that I would like to teach others how to grow food and preserve it on the cheap. There are a lot of books and mags that have the correct info but they all seem to be so involved and detailed....I think this scares some people away from trying.

I felt that way about beekeeping until I found The Barefoot Beekeeper site and book.

I think if someone could show folks that it doesn't take a lot of knowledge or money to grow food in a small space, they might be interested in doing it themselves.
