I was just thinking about how many garden superstitions there are. One is that you never give someone a plant or cutting. You turn your back and let them "steal" it. That way it's supposed to thrive.
Another I remember from mountain folks is the idea of "contrary plants" Plants that will die if you take care of them but thrive if ignored. One of those is parsley. When working around parsley they would cuss it and try not to let it know they care anything about it. A parsley seed is said to go to the devil and back seven times before it sprouts.
Anyone care to add theirs?

Okay, this flies in the face of how I've tried to live my life, Hoodat!!

I have a personal one but I blame it entirely on my wife :D.

She often tells seeds and plants, "Okay, now grow before the weeds cover your head!"

I don't want to offend her even tho' I know that keeping the weeds from covering their heads will be primarily my responsibility. I mean, I've seen her transplant right beside a weed, and leave it right where it's growing!

I decided to name all my plants. Yes! All my plants have the same name! I call them, Charlie! In fact, they have a last name! They are all called Charlie Low!

So, I tell them to, "Grow, Charlie Low, Grow!" Sometimes with a loud voice.

Too funny- you guys! I bought a little sign that said "grow". I hung it on my garden fence in an area where I had a few shasta daisy plants. I had so many daisy's this spring, I spent hours pulling them up!! I think that sign has "powers!"

I'd hang it on my maters except they're 6 feet high and still reaching.

Parsley probably has more superstitions attached to it than any other garden plant(Except, perhaps, for garlic).

Only give parsley to enemies. When parsley is given it transfers all of your bad luck to the recipient. If you want a friend to have some you must leave the garden while they steal it. Stolen parsley doesn't carry the bad luck.

If parsley flourishes in a garden it means the wife wears the pants in that family.

Parsley must be planted by a woman. If a man plants it, it will not thrive.

Really?

All those problems with a little green plant?

My concern over parsley isn't growing it. Other than chewing on it raw - it's finding some other use for it.
