Well, this is my first year for garlic and I am having fun with it. Two types didn't really come up, but four did. I have read about them for almost three years and never saw anything about garlic dividing, but apparently they do. Of the 4 types I have I have at least 2-3 of each variety that has two and in one case three shoots coming up. I pulled one last week because I hit it with the hoe and I have one small bulb and one smaller bulb. I am planning on planting both again in the fall.

Do I plant them whole or do I need to divide them up like I did last fall? Does anyone else have dividing bulbs and is there something I am doing wrong that made them divide.

That's how they reproduce, sorta like a daffodil or such. You'll have lots of garlic next year! :) You could dig them up now and put them in a cool, dry, dark place. Then wait for fall (I am supposed to plant mine in Oct. here) and divide the cloves and replant them every 6" apart. You'll have a really nice harvest for next summer. You can still use some of the larger ones now to cook with.

I think they are supposed to be planted the third week of Oct. here. I didn't get mine in until December last year. I waited until we had a freeze then I thought I'd wait until we had Indian Summer and go out and plant them. Never happened. I nearly froze to death planting them. This year I don't care if we have had a freeze or not they are going in the ground.
