Well, I messed up. I planted garlic this spring. Did not realize it should be planted in the fall. Now what do I do?

Thanks!!!

I grabbed some on sale in late spring and planted it ... I'm just going to leave it there and harvest next spring.

(This is also how I accidentally grew onions -- planted them *last* spring and they didn't do anything, ignored them and then they grew this year!)

You can still harvest them this year- they will just be small. Still perfectly usable, if you don't want them to overwinter...

You mean if you leave it in from spring to the following spring? I don't think I would do it...I would harvest it as late in the fall as I could. Get some more and plant it in the fall, to harvest for next year. You might be able to use your own garlic for seed- depending how it looks. Good Luck!

A lot of people do plant it in the spring. But I agree with Lesa, harvest it in August or early September, dry it then plant the bigger cloves and eat the smaller ones. Tasty mistakes are the best.

They may even bulb for you in the fall actually.... you never know until you mess up just how good a mistake can be! ;)

We're all in different areas, so this could work out well for you! :D
