Garlic seed called bulbils produce only one large clove the first year of growth. Planting the clove again three cloves are produced. Planing the third year perfect clones of the parent are produced. Planting successively year after years makes more of the main crop available for use. Another advantage is the bulbils are completely disease free. Garlic is asexual so no new garlic is ever produced only clones of the original.Garlic in my area is planted in October and harvested the following year in early July. It is amongst the easiest vegetables to grow.

Thank you, Durgan. I just received some garlic bulblils in the mail yesterday and wasn't sure how to treat them. You've just answered at least a dozen questions I hadn't thought to ask yet.

Love, Smart Red

I ordered garlic to plant and I already can't wait to eat it! When you plant a clove from a garlic bulb, how long does it take to harvest? And thanks for the info in bulbils, didn't know it takes 3 years for harvest!

Garlic in my area, Zone 5, is planted in October and over winters and is harvested in July the following year.

http://www.gourmetgarlicgardens.com/overview.htm A good read about garlic.

This hard neck garlic was planted in October of 2011 and was pulled today. There is about a hundred bulbs. The largest cloves were planted, and some smaller ones to compare the end product. The larger cloves produced slightly larger bulbs, but probably not such a difference to consider in a large planting. The row of second year bulbils produced bulbs almost the same size as the typical stock, so using bulbils for seed stock is probably an economical way to plant in a large field.

I selected the largest bulbs to keep separate for the 2011/2012 crop. To keep my seed stock healthy, I check garlic at the Farmers Markers and buy any exceptionally large bulbs for seed stock, which is planted in October in my region.

The hard neck garlic has been drying (cured) in the shed for about three weeks and was trimmed and placed in an open container ready for long term storage. It is thoroughly dry and the bulbs are sealed, and should store well for about 8 months. There are about 70 bulbs for use, and 20 of the largest set aside for planting of the 2011/2012 crop in October.
