Getting a Present

My husband was at the grocery store and they are selling fruit trees for $13. Usually I shy away from this, but they have some gorgeous condition pear trees he said, so he grabbed me one.

We're going to plant it out with our apples and peach tree. I'm so excited!!!

Quick look--does anybody else near you have a pear tree? You need 2 to get fruit!

Oh Vfem - Your husband is so thoughtful. It touches ones heart when hubbies do something like that. Mine usually says "You don't need it!

I love fruit trees, they are so pretty when they bloom and then you get the fruit to boot.
I bought 18 fruit trees this year, some came in the fall and the rest are coming next month.
ducks is right though you will need a second one to pollinate and it has to be a different variety of pear.
Although some trees claim to be a self pollinator but the yields are not that good from them.
I would check around the neighborhood for another type of pear tree or buy a second one, unless you are more interested in its appearance (they are beautiful when they bloom) than you are in the fruit.

I was told I have a chance at minor fruiting for the D'anjou with just one tree.... however, one of my neighbor's has a bartlett. (He's my back up! AND he has 2 bee hives he manages. How lucky is I?!)

I'm very lucky to have a neighbor who has peach, pear, nectarine, apple and almond trees. So it feels great I can pick and chose what I want and his trees will help, so if I don't want 2, I can get away from it. I also have another neighbor further down who has apples, and something else... but I am unsure as I barely know him.

Now, if I want Cherry trees, I think I have to go ahead and get 2. I don't know of anyone around here with any.
