Ok, since Monty can grow monster alien Punkins, his handicap for the giant punkin contest is his entry has to be a cantaloupe or cucumber or gherkin, lolzzz!

But especially since he didn't want a giant cabbage or giant tomato contest, I'm starting one of these too. (See how I am).

Now, Monty's handicap for the giant cabbage contest is, his entry has to be one of the pointy varieties, 50% taller than wide. He can cross a special giant variety with one of the pointy varieties. Yea. This'll also be cool, especially since a new variety may come out of this.

=====

About Monty's handicap for the giant tomato contest: (That picture of me in the avatar I'm holding the biggest tomato ever grown in Montana, but it mostly grew in the greenhouse). How about no handicap for Monty in the giant tomato contest? Let's go for broke with this one! Want to see that 10 pound barrier for Tomatoes shattered!

You know, a cross between an Early Jersy Wakefield and a Megaton would be interesting. Unfortunately, that would have to wait until 2015 to grow. This year would be growing the first year plants, cross would have to occur next year, and seed of the new variety would go in 2015. I actually have some EJW and Megaton started. I may start some late plants for seeding. I think Megaton is already a hybrid though, so not sure what will happen.

How big was the mater in the avatar Marshall? I don't hold any records, but I do have a few tricks to grow them to 3-4 pounds. You're on for largest tomato ;) Somewhere I have seeds from the Ohio state record tomato from a few years ago. It's too late to start them now though. I think I can muddle through with what I do have started though. I'll start posting pics for the contest.

OK, so first I had to choose from the group of tomato plants in the hoop house...

Here are the six plants I decided on:

I chose these 6 because they are the most stretchy of the variety I wanted. But why in the world would I want stretchy, leggy tomato plants???

I'm not tellin' ;)

A giant tomato contest would be exciting. Great idea, Marshall! It would be easier to do than the pumpkin contest too (and less nerve-wracking.) :p Let it run all summer and show off those whoppers as they come ripe!

'acuz you can practically bury the whole leggy plants in soil that's about 50% bonemeal and dash some rooting hormone on them occasionally, and first get monster roots going. Just make sure you call the chinese root comisar to make sure the crews leave the roots alone when they start popping out of the ground somewhere just east and south of the Gobi desert.

Yea, we'll cut you some slack and you can use the megaton and ejw as is. each will have their own class though. But you have to cross them even if megaton is an f1. so, the 2014 cabbage contest will have your new f1 seed growing, provided you can get them to flower and seed soon enough, else that'll have to be for the 2015 season.

hmmm, what kind of giant cantaloupe will you be growing??? oh wait, that was the other thread...(I got a new french press for coffee. gotta get used to the new caffeine buzz...)

Well, well, well...we have another competition tomato grower in our midst...Marshall. How does 18" of stem, a compost filled trench, and several drenches of willow water and indole-3-butyric acid sound? Set a few blossoms, pinch the suckers and other flowers...sound about right? Maybe a little fruit shading...this is going to be fun!!!

A note to other gardeners who may be reading this: There is a lot more to it than that. If you follow my lead and your plants die a horrible death, don't blame me...just saying :p

I can't grow the EJW/Megaton cross next year. They won't flower until next year. It will be 2015 before the first seeds could be planted.

I'm staying out of the cucurbit contest. Period. It's bad enough you suckered me into tomatoes. DW is going to freak. She knows how obsessive I become when growing competitively. But what the heck, it's just a few tomatoes right???
