I know this is more government regulations and more interference in private business. Some people will see it as an affront to their liberties. More state money will have to be found to enforce these provisions because if its not inspected and prosecuted its not enforced and that costs money. Government bureaucracy will grow.

But Im a believer that if you want something you should be willing to pay for it and I think this is something worth paying for. I consider it good news.

I am assuming and may be assuming wrong....This means that any GMO food that is produced in Conn must be labeled? Not any food sold correct? And does this include people that sell food at Farmers Markets and such? Just asking. It is a very interesting time in food history right now that is for sure.

Boy, that is good news! Just a reminder that anything labeled "organic" is automatically GMO free. That is one of the standards of "organic". I really hope other states will follow...

This is madness at it's finest. Here's how it will play out.

Anyone selling food in that state will put a standard disclaimer on all their food saying it may or may not contain some GMO products. Those that sell non-GMO labeled products will be sued as soon as someone tests for GMO products. So they will be put out of business or their cost of goods will be so high in defending what they've done that the net result is the same.

More $$$$$$ for the lawyers and legal system as well as Government will now tax to pay for the jobs created and who will pay????? John Doe consumer........too bad there are no brain cells in that state government......

In general laws (codes) are passed so the legal community can get richer, no exception here.

Want products grown, processed, sold like you want? Support them with your $$$$$$$. If that is where the money is, it will be produced, laws won't change much except for lawyers income.

Apparently implementation of the law is dependent on four other states in the northeast passing a similar law. If they don't, the law will be unenforceable.

Let's hope there is one clear thinking person voting. Bad law. Will break those they are supposedly protecting. Lawyers are lining up to sue as I type.

I can see seedcorn's point. on the other hand, we need to be able to choose our foods. right now, we are at the mercy of the growers (especially the big corp giants). gmo has not had a fraction of the studies done necessary to determine it's influence on our health or the future of our food security.

I think there is a similar time line between the advent of quantities of gmo products in our diet and Autism and Alzheimer rates skyrocketing. I would like to see studies done before it is dumped on us without knowing what it's doing.

I also think gmo foods are a recipe for famine. one rogue virus or fungus that has the ability to wipe out a significant gmo crop such as corn or soy and the consequences would be gigantic. monocultures are very vulnerable in my opinion.

There is another way to go about it which doesn't involve politics or politicians. Food products can carry the Non GMO Project label voluntarily. They are very strict about who gets to use the label. That allows consumers to choose voluntarily to support non GMO products with their dollars.
Remember it was not laws but consumer demand that effectively stopped the use of growth hormones in dairy products. When consumer demand forced Wal Mart to announce they would no longer carry dairy products that were produced with the hormone that pretty much made it obsolete.
Just look for this label on the products you buy. The difference in price is usually quite small and, in my estimation, well worth it.
This is the logo you want to look for. It will usually be found on the front of the label.
