Few things bug me like GNATS ( ticks! ) Are the gnats BAD everywhere? You can't leave the house without getting swarmed. I saw a jogger yesterday stop and swing wildly at the swarm following her. (To no avail.) I got up this morning looking like someone poked me in the eye. Blue under and weepy. So many things are said to help keep them away. Nothing really works well for me. What do you all use as a gnat repellant?

Black flies, Carol?

I was noticing the fungus gnats in the greenhouse but they disappear once I get the plants out in the yard with fresh air and sunshine. Might fly in my eye.

I don't have a good idea for a repellent. Black flies are only a problem here and there out in the country in this neck of the woods. Often, I have sprayed my hat, collar, cuffs and socks with off! mosquito repellent before venturing into mosquito country. I'm not sure if it has helped with the black flies.

hmmm, my spell checker allows me to spell it "repellent" or "repellant" . . .

AH-HA! The one and only plus to working at a landfill. You have so much flying around all day every day that you learn to ignore anything that doesn't actually bite, aim for your eye or foul up your coffee.

Still think I'm going to try hanging a bunch of those littel tree air fresheners off of my hat... they're supposed to be good for repelling bugs. :clap

I hate gnats!! My parents yard was so thick with them, you literally could not enjoy being outside. I wish I could tell you, I had a cure....

We get buffalo gnats here, why they are called buffalo, I have no idea.......maybe they could eat a buffalo, cause I know they sure drive us crazy. They get after the hens and drive them nuts too. I spray the girls with vanilla after they go to roost. it keeps the gnats off. Maybe a little dab of vanilla behind your ears.....Granny Clampett of Beverly Hillbillies fame claimed it made you irresistible to the men folks, so be careful with that stuff.

Baymule, yes they are buffalo gnats. They are in swarms big enough to carry one off. I have tried the vanilla. Only works a little. Needs frequent refreshers. Haha I LOVE Granny Clampett.
Bobm I have been tempted with the flame thower!
Canesisiter I want a photo fo the hat when you hang the airfresheners. :)

Must be too dry here for such bugs. I have never seen one. But, I did read on Sufficientself that someone's chickens are actually being killed by such critters!! Very sad!!

So far this year (knocking on the wooden desk) we haven't had much of a problem with the gnats. Early most springs it is nearly impossible to work outside amidst their attacking swarms. What I've done is make a "veil" of a shear black scarf. Tucked into my shirt collar and over my face, I find I can foil their insidious desire to enter my eyes, nose, mouth, and bite moist skin.

I keep thinking I need to purchase a beekeeper's hat or mosquito netting over a hat, but forget once they fade off as the weather warms.

You might try a lemon scented lotion.... Dr Watson makes one that is great!
I also use Skin-so-Soft, original scent, to help keep bugs off me.
