I've never heard her comedy act, but a couple years ago I read her book "Laughing in the Dark" that my neighbor let me have when she was clearing out, getting ready to move.
It was my sister's first time seeing her show. I had warned her to being tissues - she didn't listen. Chonda has such an amazing story of incredible challenges and overcoming through the power of Jesus. We laughed, we cried, we made faces at the back of the lady's head in front of me that kept getting in my way, we sang, we cheered, we laughed and cried some more. Then we went out for chicken and waffles.
I was curious about who Ms Pierce is and read a little about her.
She certainly did have those challenges beginning very early in life.
The Wikipedia article probably doesn't do a very good accounting but it was fun learning how Minnie Pearl played an important part as an onstage model for her. My family tuned in to the Grand Ole Opry and laughed, probably too much, at Minnie and some of the antics. She remained a fun part of my childhood entertainment and continued so, long after I lost interest in whatever else was going on at Opryland.
I have NO idea where it came from or how it started but it's a pretty big thing and it seems to go hand-in-hand with late night meals.
I used to think it was such a weird thing until I ran rescue for a few years. Lots of times we'd get a call right at dinner time and didn't get clear until late. So - chicken strips & waffles!
