Goldfish pond and keeping clean

I have a neighbor who wants to add a small goldfish pond in the middle of their flower beds. She has numerous flowers the pop up all throughout the year. I told her I wasn't sure it was a good idea. I thought with all the flowers she might get algae in the pond. How often would you have to clean a small pond - she would put in a small fountain to keep the water moving.

It depends on what's in the pond

If you have fish in the pond, you will have to clean it more often. The more fish you have, and the larger they grown, the more cleaning will be required. The small electric motor that keeps the fountain running will help aerate it, but she will definitely need to clean it on occasion.

We had one without fish in it and it got nasty in a hurry in the summer heat and humidity. Green algae everywhere. we ended up putting a certain amount of chlorine in the pond about once a week just so we could enjoy it. And we had a fountain to help aerate it as well.

I don't think the chlorine is an option with fish in the pond though, is it?

The pond would look really pretty in the midst of the flower beds, but she has to be willing to do the cleaning, and also make sure there is enough room around the pond for her to maneuver as she cleans so she doesn't trample her flowers.

Drain built in

I used to have a koi pond, and I swore if I ever built another one I would tilt the entire thing a bit so the water would well in a specified area of the bottom. I would also construct it so that I could drain that water out when I wanted to clean it. I did use a pump when I cleaned it, but there would always be part of the muck I could not get out.
