Red ... you now have to call 911 and inform the operator that "someone " is ready to pummel a certain geothermal installer about the head and shoulders with a baseball bat for causing a water leak in the basement which caused this "someone" 's husband to exert great physical energy then exhaustion. In this "someone" 's desperation to save said husband, this "someone" had to exert great mental powers to invent a contraption in an attempt to remove said flood waters . Then due to this horrendous flood, and impending mould growth, which this "someone" will have to have FEMA send their emergency response team who will show up in a year or two to write a report on this hazardous health and environmental damage. Then the following year , after coming across said report, the EPA will remediate the "hazard " by removing the original cause of the leak by declaring the geothermal device as " fraking " equipment as it removes heat energy from the earth without first fileing an environmental impact report. Then the EPA declares this "someone" 's basement a wetland therefore the structure above it is in violation of the building code for being built over the wetland. Thereupon the Federal authorities are then ordered to remove the structure in question. This causes the "someone" caller to see Red and steam to exit out of her ears as she had expended great mental energy and expense in redecorating this now condemned structure. Then this "someone" is contemplating a law suit against the geothermal installer as she is in the process in consulting a lawyer to include the Federal Government, FEMA and EPA as co- defendants for her mental distress and asking the court for $1, 359, 750,980. 05 as compensation for loss of her fireplace which was her source of heat in the dead of winter, her residence home and bountiful gardens as her source of organic food. :th

Red you must have been in some kind of mood finally being warm to create that. Maybe all your time dealing with daily crises in the classroom helped prepare you for that moment.

When a bushy tailed rat chewed the flashing off a vent through the roof and I noticed water dripping from my den ceiling onto my coffee table during a south Louisiana frog strangler, I was not in the mood for anything that elaborate. I formed a quick collar around the pipe with duct tape and plastic and formed a spout to direct the flow into a bucket in the attic. I'm amazed and impressed you took the time to have that much fun with it.

You forgot the duct tape! :gig
Check out photo three. The duct tape is there. It just wouldn't work well in wet conditions.

What you don't see is all the discarded duct tape I tried to use. Duct tape was my first thought for a solution.

Good eyes, @Ridgerunner! Duct tape wasn't the easiest thing to see.

Congratulations on your invention, but shouldn't the geo-thermal installation guys be responsible for taking care of that?
HE SAID the water coming in was from the snow melting. He wasn't responsible for snow melt. It seems he wasn't responsible for getting those holes sealed yet either. In his defence, it has been cold working outside and driving 244 miles (round trip) to silicone two holes would have been wasteful.

Today, the frost must be gone in the trench because there isn't any standing (or running) water down there.

The solution was born of desperation and constructed of materials at hand. The exercise machine was pushed into a corner (what better place for it?) and there were two pipes laying against the wall. The tin was removed from duct work that was revised for the geo-stuff. The chair was my seat while I held the taped foil in place with two fingers.

The roasting fork was a replacement for my two fingers. The funnel was needed because the end of the fork wouldn't fit into the pipe and the broken CD cover was used to keep the foil tight against the wall so the water would run in front rather than behind the foil. It was NOT FUN! It was necessity being the Mother of invention along with two near frozen fingers. The duct tape was and is always handy here in the country.

The fun came when I realized it was working and took a good look at my efforts. And this was done before the heat was switched on.

By this time I was more frustrated and despondent than angry. Still, DH was mumbling things that could easily have required a 911 call for the Geo-guy (along with some unnatural poses.)

We haven't had the basement walls up for very long and I was afraid we'd have problems with mold. DH, in his great wisdom, had already planned for an accidental water leak so none of the drywall was damaged.

Sigh, you should see the gouges in my new basement stairs though. Oh well, this Pollyanna prefers to look at the warm, fuzzy side of the story.

And there was an environmental impact report done.

As for the nightmarish number of twisted pipesand endless gages ... I know a General Contractor and subdivision builder who was on the forefront of the solar movement that did some MAJOR original experiments with All of the bells and whistles for solar heating of homes as well as hot water for the home and pools. I personally observed the experiments and homes being tested as well as talked to him at leangth during the experiments. He built several solar subdivisions in central Cal. . I built my own country home based on Mike's experiments of what actually worked and was actually viable financialy but not those items for feeling the jollies of going solar.
