There are a bunch of mushrooms that look like that when coming up; some are quite edible, others are quite deadly. Unless you have a local (human) source that you trust with your life (and have good health insurance too) to help you identify them, I would NOT NOT NOT experiment with this. Certainly please do not attempt identification via google, forums or even books.

The main two genera that look like that are Amanita (some excellently edible, some kill ya dead, and the two kinds not only can look pretty much alike but can *hybridize*, isn't that swell) and Lepiota (many are edible). I say this if you want to pursue your curiosity, NOT for culinary identifcation purposes.

Good luck, have fun, don't eat 'em,

Pat

Broke they look cool.
I like all mushrooms, but I don't eat them. Well unless I get them from the store.
I try to check each morning for new ones in my garden.
I can ID only one mushroom. ;)

Yeah, you'd want a local expert to ID it for you, since species vary by location. If you have a college nearby, see if they have a mycologist or check with your local extension agent. Sometimes they'll have one on staff.

While there are relatively few deadly poisonous mushrooms, there are a great many that will cause gastric upset. Even some of the edible mushrooms will cause bad stomach reactions in some people. (That's why with any new mushroom, you should only eat just a little bit at first, to see if it agrees with you.) Also, some mushrooms are edible, but not worth eating. Then there are the few choice varieties, like your chantrelles that people highly prize.

I am the same way though, every mushroom I find, I like to try to identify it, for the sake of curiosity!

I would not touch those with a 10 ft pole..patandchickens is absolutely right..I was told those were deadly from the time I was little, and always watched for them and destroyed them in the kids play yard. Its surprizing how many are edible but they are not worth the risk. Had a friend who was invited to a big mushroom fry at a friends.. he ended up extremely sick, and had the muscles in his neck paralized for a while over that little treat. They were never sure if it was the mushrooms or perhaps a poisonus spider that was overlooked when cleaning. ugggg

I don't know what kind it is, but it is most likely inedible/poisonous. The white ones with a stem and that kind of gills usually are. The good edible mushrooms tend to be few and far between!

I go about stomping them in my yard too, because of my toddler. Even an edible wild mushroom if eaten raw will make you sick. I remember my little sister having to go to the emergency room as a child because she put one in her mouth.

I agree as far with everyone else when finding a strange mushroom.
I get rid of any and all mushrooms that ever pop up in the yard.
However, you can grow mushrooms for yourself if you are up to it.
I grow my own mushrooms.
I started them with stock that I purchased and I know exactly what they should look like and I know where they grow since I innoculated them.
I have morels, blue oysters, ****ake, maitake and hericium erinacious.

Cool!
How are you doing them? The Ball Jar method?
