I ordered a banana plant a week or so ago from Florida and it came in today. It's already potted up. If I can get enough growth in the pot I'll plant it in the open in late Spring. I've grown bananas here before but they were the "finger" variety. Small bananas with a sort of citrussy taste. This one is called "ice cream" and is supposed to be a full sized banana with a vanilla taste. It's supposed to be tolerant of the San Diego climate.

How fun! When I was little we had a couple of banana plants, the finger type. I loved it when my mom would pick them and we got to eat the miniature fruit. Seemed like they didn't have fruit very often, but maybe that's because when you're little everything fun seems to take forever to come.

How cool is that? Another reason to live in San Diego! I really enjoy growing veggies, but I love growing fruit! Enjoy!

So cool! A friend bought plants to grow hydroponically and asked if I wanted one, but I declined. He placed one plant in his office by a window to grow, and he had to remove the panels from the suspended ceiling after only six months or so to accommodate the plant. I never did find out if he got any bananas though. It is a good thing he was the boss and owned the building.

I see quite a few red leaf banana plants grown as landscaping here but they never bear fruit. I'm too practical to devote good gardening sace to something that doesn't produce.
