I met Ken yesterday and got my first seeds of Dr. Martin Pole Lima Beans!! He posted on here last year about having some and after messaging him that I would like to try them he said he would get them to me. We discovered he came to this small town for product for his business and would call when he was in town. SO, today I met him to pick up my seeds. If I am successful with my crop this summer I will share them with others. I am hoping I can get them to germinate (difficult seed, I understand) and produce a great crop. He says they have to be at least 3 feet apart and held with 4x4 posts and sturdy frames because of the size and weight of the plants. I am so excited! Hopefully I will do them justice and be able to help expand the growing of this heirloom. Huge bean!

Oh, I remember reading the posts about them. Good things come to those who wait! So happy you got them.

To enhance germination I would soak the seed in a warm place-try a few to see if this helps. I think the soil should be warm too so don't plant too early.

Yes, Catjac1975, Ken says to soak and sprout, then take off outside covering before putting into a pot to grow to about 4-6 leaves and then transplant. He thinks that may be why no seed company grows for sale. They are difficult to start but great producers afterwards.

We will use most of them fresh but Ken says they do real well dried also. I may try both ways and of course if we like them as well as he says the taste is we will probably freeze some.

I've never had fresh lima beans before, but love the dried ones. Hope your crop does well and that you are happy with the beans!!
