One way my Dad's family survived the Depression was because they got out of the Dust Bowl before the drought hit.
Could be, that was just luck.
Mom said she didn't know when it started or ended; her family was always depressed ... Mom was only 10 when the stock market crashed so maybe, that explains things.
Mom had a very resourceful mother. Dad's mother was resourceful enough but his father was a farmer. Mom's father was salesman and a cop. Helpless.
My Daddy's father was a share cropper in the Rio Grande valley in south Texas. They were poor, but had plenty to eat at a time when people went hungry. My Daddy worked in the fields, hoeing weeds with his father at ten years old for 50 cents a day. All day.
My Mom fared better. Her father was a postman, delivering mail. Her mother worked as a secretary in the packing sheds. Also in the Rio Grande valley, huge producer of fruits and vegetables. They also had plenty to eat and actually had good paying jobs for the times.
My Grandmother on dad side fed a army of people using a tiny city lot. Almost every inch of yard grew something editable. My Grandmother on mom side slept till noon and opened a can of peas and one of carrots everyday. As a little girl my mom prayed for anything else for dinner. My grandmothers where as different as you could get.
My mom used to tell the story of being about 8 or 10, very poor and hungry, when her sister found an old stale biscuit under the bed. The kids all fought for it. Now that's poor.
