My grandson is making a presentation, for his group of 5 students, on their research and recomendation of their advanced computer class on their investigating a quite large, older shopping mall and their recomendations for improving the physical improvements as well as customer shopping experience satisfaction first to his instructors and to his other classmates. Then he will be the spokesman at another presentation this evening open to their parents , city and mall representatives, as well as the public. :) :thumbsup

All of us are very proud of what he is achieving. He was grilled by his instructors as well as people from the audience . He had all his answers articulated in an intelligent manner and satisfied all questioners. Since this mall is in a historical zone and therefore aging, his group has to be politically correct  in their recomendations. Therefore it would cost many more dollars to rehab it than starting from scratch. He privately told his mom that a match or a bulldozer would be much cheeper and deliver a much safer and arcitecturally more funtional and more pleasing to the eye structures with much better traffic patterns that would also meet or exceed all existing building codes. He gave as an example of the rehabed downtown building where his computer classes are offered. They had to tear down all of the brick, wood members, windows, etc. down to the original steel infastructure, remove and replace some original concrete foundation and add new footings to better support the building as per earth quake codes, then add all kinds of crossmembers, add more structural steel, remove old bolts and some welds then add new bolts and welds , install all new plumbing and wiring, new glazing and used the original brick to make it look like the original building. The contractor had cost overuns at every turn due to unknown / hidden defects and added recomendations to meet earthquake , fire and exit safety issues from the building inspectors and cost of labor for delays of 7 months and added scope of work. The building owners then had to refinance the building to cover the huge cost overuns. Small wonder ! :th
