I am always trying to come up with a way to "plug" or cover up the holes in the bottom of pots for drainage. I know they are important, but usually they are so large all the water and half the dirt pores out! I have tried bits of clay pots, soda tops, etc. Just saw a great idea on Pinterest. Put a coffee filter in the bottom of the pot, before you put in the soil! So simple, and smart. Maybe you have already thought of this, now I just have to remember it!

I haven tried a coffee filter but I have had good luck with a small piece of window screen placed over the whole.

I cut a small piece of window screen a little bigger than the whole I'm covering then I use some Marine Epoxy to fasten into place.

I saw that on pinterest too! I pinned it! hahaha

So going to do that this year. I'm also going to go get a few more pots for my front porch from Home Depot today. I really want to create a shaded porch garden out front since its north facing. With a 32 foot porch, its naked without plants and I don't want to be cleaning up mud that leaks from the pots because of those huge holes. That's a lot of work! So thanks for reminding me of that pin.

(Darn addicting site! :D )

Wow. Sometimes you just need the blindingly obvious pointed out to you, and you are left wondering why you didn't think of it yourself! Also useful as I tend to end up with the drainage holes gradually widening due to frost cracking the clay of the pot.
