My DH and I are thinking of heading north this month to see some of the great lakes area. We have not been north, except the north west.
If we go up through the "mitten" of Michigan, trying to avoid the big cities, cross at Mackinac Bridge then head west, then south again, we could at least see two of the lakes. I think.
I haven't the slightest idea what to expect. Lots of traffic? Moose?
I see there are several state parks. Is September one of the busiest times to see this area? Should we expect to need reservations to get motel accommodations?
Does anyone have any "must see" destinations? We don't have passports, so can't cross the border. Any ideas?

After Labor Day weekend the summer travel season is over and things slow down somewhat. Sounds like a very interesting trip for sure. Need to put that on our travel list.

Check your travel route as-I believe-there is heavy road construction around M. Bridge. Lot of construction on I-80 & Chicago-always is. Buy an I-Pass if you don't have one-well worth the $$.

Traffic is not bad in Michigan. Take plenty of $$$$$$. I didn't think there was much to see traveling to M bridge. Just trees & highway. It was interesting once there but we didn't stay in M. City.

Lucky good for you when was the last time you and hubby went away together? Is it to early for fall color ?

We flew to Eugene Oregon in June for a family reunion, then drove to Bandon for a couple of days. First time we had flown for many years. That was an experience, but DH was good natured about the whole thing, so it was do-able.

Thanks for the heads-up about the construction. We are going to try to avoid getting close to Chicago. Have you been on route 23 going up the eastern side of Michigan? It looks like it ought to parallel Lake Huron, more or less.

Sorry, know nothing about SR 23. Looks like you can see Lake Erie, Huron and Michigan. Maybe Lake Superior as well.

Son just told me to use the I-PASS lane whether you have a pass or not. You can go to the I-DOT net site within the next week and make payment with no problem at the cash pay price. Otherwise, you will be billed and be mailed a ticket at a later date. Can't avoid paying, but you can move through the gridlock at toll sites easily that way.

Is he sure it works that way? Seems too easy. I know with an I-Pass, you can.
