I planted some 50 green and wax beans about two weeks ago, most of them came up but at least a third of them have no primary leaves, were they cut by some kind of bug or just defective seeds? I haven't seen any insect that does this.. :/

Every varmint out there seems to like chewing on bean seedlings.

Two that come immediately to mind are slugs and rabbits.

I bet mice should also be likely suspects . . .

Don't count out pill bugs aka roly poly. They are wearing out my squash seedlings right now. They are eating them about as fast as they pop up.

At my house the culprits are rolly pollys and earwigs. Fortunately DE and/or finely crushed eggs shells seems to keep them from destroying my beans. Chinese red noodle beans are the ones I seem to have the most problem with.
