We bought some green onion plants at the local nursery. About 20 of them. When we took them out of their little plastic planters we noticed that they were pretty root bound. They've been in the ground about 1 weeks to 2 weeks. They've already started going to seed. I was wondering what I need to do to save those seeds and is it to late to get those seeds in the ground?

Well, other than my inclination to take those plants back to the people you bought them from for a refund . . .

I have saved seed from onion plants that have overwintered in the garden and that seed has worked just fine. I wasn't faced with harvesting the seed in March, however.

What might work well for you (and works for me in about 1 out of 3 years, I gave up ;)), is planting an onion crop as soon as it begins to cool after the heat of the summer. Our winters are a little too tuff for the tiny plants and they will often bolt as soon as spring comes rather than making bulbs. You should not have that problem (unless you buy at that nursery again ;)).

And, I'm talking from experience growing Walla Walla and such way up here in the north. Onion varieties and culture may be quite a bit different there in Texas.
