I have never grown green onions and I never bought them in the store. All I ever knew about them as a kid was rarely my mother would have them on the grocery list and I remember my dad and her eating the white bulb and not the green and I am pretty sure the green was thrown away. I got married and my husband never said we should buy green onions. DS gets married and his wife buys them and cuts the green up and puts them on top of a potato or chili and DS really likes this. She will take the bulb part and put in a glass with a little water and regrow the tops. I have chives growing around the garden and cut to put on baked potatoes. Did my parents do this all wrong? lol

If I have green tops on onionsw that I am using for cooking, I cut the greens up and add them along with the bulb to the dish that is being prepared.

Well, if I am just thinking of the pleasure I take from chives on cream cheese and baked potatoes – no, your parents didn't do anything wrong :).

Green onions are probably mostly used in salads. We use them a lot in stir-fries and noodle soups.

Think raw our lightly cooked. Leftover mashed potatoes, an egg, chopped green onions ... potato cakes ;).

I love green onions! I use them constantly and I use the whole thing - just trim off the very ends on each side. I grow them a lot in the garden. I planted them one year in such a way that I could fit my lawn lounge chair beside them. Then every time I sunbathed, I would do weeding right there laying down! It was the year of my best crop! 😁
