Hello all. I just put up a plastic greenhouse.its a roundtop 8'x6'x8'. I live in ct and was wondering if I should keep it up during winter? This is my first greenhouse, but have had gardens for a long time.

:frowWelcome Jaybird!
Not having a greenhouse myself I'm probably not qualified to answer this, but in general your greenhouse film will last longer if you take it down for the winter. On the other hand, your greenhouse is small enough to keep a snowload of without difficulty, so leaving it up through the winter shouldn't hurt. Got pictures? :)

:frow :welcome Hi, @jaybird38! :welcome :frow So happy that you found us. This is a great group that I'm sure you will enjoy. It looks like you'll have no problem jumping in and getting aquainted. Great question! Wish I could help you, but I don't have a greenhouse for winter use.

I am going to try to grow some things in a few weeks or so. Not sure about through the winter. It gets really cold in ct.

Hi @jaybird38 !

I built my greenhouse to be used in winter. It is more of a "sunshed" since it has an insulated roof and north wall. The plastic film covered south wall slopes at a good angle to catch the winter sun.

Unwilling to run the natural gas heater in there during the coldest months, I have just waited until early March and used it for plant starts.

After several years of keeping rosemary and such on the greenhouse floor through the winter, I tried growing Asian greens. Some were started by seed, some were transplants.

The rosemary was covered during the coldest nights and days and does fine. I set up a little plastic tunnel with pvc pipe hoops. During the cold nights, a tarp goes over the film. I was pleased with how well I could grow the greens!

A tunnel inside your greenhouse ... or, a coldframe ... do you think that might be possible? This is further north than Connecticut so our days are shorter. We had several days with sub-zero weather last winter. Bok choy came through really well and there are other cool-season greens to choose from.

:) Steve
