Growing Grains?

Anyone grow their own grains for XXXXX purpose? i was hoping to grow my own mainly for bread and maybe try making cereal. anyone have any experience, especially in colder areas with winters.

depending on where you are at, it's too late in midwest to sow winter wheat. If you are out west, you still have a chance to sow spring wheat. Or grow oats (March sowing), corn (april/may planting). What do you want to grow?

Mother Earth News has a few articles on the subject. Also homemade mechanics to deal with grinding, etc. I always read them longingly, but it looks like an awful lot of work- with flour being fairly inexpensive...

Probably the fastest and easiest grain to grow in a relatively small space is millet. If you grow "small millet" you can have a crop in 90 days. It is no good for bread but makes a great cooked cereal.
