So a dear friend of mine (who I affectionately call the "junk man") called me via a bad cell phone connection. He was saying he found something that discourages deer, it was crackle, crackle, pop- did I want it? Having no idea what he said- I said sure bring it over. I was imagining a gallon jug of "Deer Away" or something like that.
He arrived with a huge garbage bag of human hair-he had been at the barber shop!!! I have heard many times that human hair works to deter deer...
I have added so much fencing to my gardens that deer really aren't much of a problem anymore. However, I have a hungry family of groundhogs who were digging under the fence in my pumpkin patch. So, I figured why not??? I spread a very generous amount of hair all along the fence. It has been several days and the groundhogs have not dug under.... We'll see how long it works.
I do love that man- but 50 pounds of hair, is so not what I was expecting!!!

I would never say that-he gave me my chicken coop, so he is a keeper!

Nice guy! I'd heard that too, but I've never been brave enough to ask the beautician for some. I get enough weird looks dumpster diving for newspapers to mulch with. Keep us posted on how it turns out! I was just talking to my dad last night and he was lamenting how he can't keep the "city deer" out of his little plot of 6 tomato plants. (Meanwhile, the "country deer" don't touch mine at nearly 3000 sq. ft. of growing space. Such brutal irony! :th) If this works out for you, I'll be sure to recommend it to him!
