I grew it this year, because I was tired of buying it in the store for frying up with chicken and turkey. I had NO IDEA how pretty the flowers were.
Now, for my request...Here is an article about harvesting.

As far as I'm concerned, many varieties of okra are better as ornamentals than as veggies -- not to underrate the value of good fried okra or gumbo, but because they really are PURTY. The times I've grown 'em it's been as much to look at as to eat from.

There are heirloom type red okras but I believe there are modern commercial varieties too so I am not sure it is possible to tell just by looking?

Pat, now unfortunately living pretty much too far north for decent okra-growing
