Couldn't wait any longer. Got the "PotMaker" out and the Sunday newspaper and started making seed starter pots. Mighty neat contraption and saves a bundle.......no peat pot expense. Got it last year and the pots it makes work just as good as the peat pots.
Hope to get 20 or 30 made today and gonna go ahead and start planting some early, cool weather "stuff" indoors for trasplanting a little later on......you know....get a jump on mother nature.

I modified the size paper I use and it makes a much sturdier pot than what is in the instructions.

I got mine off eBay and saved about $5. (Brand new)
That is an awesome idea. I wish I had thought of that. When you posted this I was thinking it was some machine that molded moss and all kinds of stuff together and was probably out of my price range. That seems perfect. I am going to go out to the shop and spin one of those up tomorrow.

You can also use a glass. It works best with one that is the same size, top to bottom....not tapered. I use one to make my own pots.

Was just visiting the "Red House Farm Allotments" link through one of the links Hattie provided. In the picture section of "A Season of Gardening", there was a picture of a green house on the allotment and there was boxes and boxes and boxes filled with, what looks like, paper, seed starter pots with seedlings sprouting. Wonder if they have the 'PotMaker' available in the UK.

boggybranch, do you really love 'em? I've looked at ads for these things for a few years now, but I think they'll just fall apart before I put the seedlings into the ground. But, there's gotta be some economy to them. And, we're not destroying peat bogs...and the cow manure pots are really pricy.

I did find that, going by the directions given, the pots did seem to come apart too easily, so....I experimented with different sizes. Here is what I came up with to deal with the pots stability.
I take a sheet of newspaper that is 24"X12" and fold it over, lengthwise. Then, from the folded side, I fold it over, roughly, half again. This makes the walls extra thick and sturdy plus the extra length makes the bottoms stronger.
The pots held up without any 'coming apart' problems (provided you don't "go crazy" watering them).
I am REALLY 'sold' on this 'contraption'....won't EVER be buying peat pots, again.
