Have you noticed any attitude changes with food prices going up?

I don't go to grocery store very often.

Last 3 years, all I've heard from my wife is the garden costs us money. Cheaper to buy from store, etc.......... As I told her, I DON'T CARE, I ENJOY IT, I'M GOING TO DO IT!!!!!!

Now Saturday, she says groceries are getting higher. Maybe we need to increase the garden. Today, she is making suggestions as to what to grow. I'm moving the location. Her and DD were saying about making it smaller. Now I should have no problems as I move it and expand it. Haven't heard from DS as he's starting his own life in an apartment--altho last year he commented if I grew more sweet peppers & jalepeno's he'd like some for cooking.......... Oh, the free loaders I've raised.

I love picking fresh garden produce, preparing it and EATING it. I also love being able to give to others.

It's so nice to have your family on board. My DH has always supported my garden habit and let me have free rein as far as where and how much, but the last few years he's been making requests about growing more of this or that. And here's the shocker- this year he said he'd help if I wanted him to!!! This from the guy who enjoys gardening as a spectator sport. Definitely taking him up on that!

Seedcorn, if they want more of this or that, maybe they can help.

Some of the garden is especially important to me. So, I'm the guy in there for 100% of the needs. DW doesn't take an interest in the tomato patch until the fruit ripens and doesn't care much for most of them, anyway. She complains quite a bit about the tomatoes - it is to keep me from doing anything extra for them. Too much work, don't you know ?

Check to see if that apartment has a good south window. Some place appropriate for starting some sweet pepper and jalapeo seedlings ;).

i know your feelings about the dh thinking it is a spectator sport for him! i've been suggesting to my dh the past 3 years since we've been in our house and this year i asked again and he said he would gladly help out to help cut the grocery costs and since he will be home in the evenings again! i still don't see this happening when baseball season is going on and i am out till it is very dark in the yard still planting or doing work!

he's the one that does most of the cooking, but when it comes to grocery shopping i'm the one that usually does it and gets to see the price increases in the food! if i sent him he buys things at top dollar! :barnie

Now that is funny.

Actually, I'd just as soon as my DW would stay out. She tries to weed things I don't want weeded (leaves weeds, pulls plants) & doesn't do what she could. It is my little sanctuary from my job.

All DH's coworkers have been sooo amused with tales of the garden, the chickens, etc. And now we are going to a weekend workshop on hog butchering and sausage making.

This year, there are 3 others who keep chickens at DH's work. And one of our neighbors in the subdivision has chickens - and a rooster. Everyone is talking more about how we do it and less about how weird it is. Lets see how their gardens do. I want to compare notes!

What most people don't get is they'll plant flowers all over the place. If they'd just stick a pepper plant, tomato plante, etc, here and there, they could supplement their food bill without doing anymore work than they do now.

At first I was a lone oddball. Then my friends started telling me about how their neighbors were getting chickens. Then everyone started getting interested in gardening. Now those who puttered a little bit are already talking about "getting serious" this year.

With water prices being so high here in So.AZ, attempting to grow your own food in not cost effective.

But, that doesn't stop me from trying. I do hear more and more of people here in town wanting to have a few chickens and a garden. Too bad we don't get more rain.
