ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WSPA) – A woman is accused of hitting a purse thief with her SUV, according to a report from Asheville Police.

Police say they got a call about an assault at the Walmart in East Asheville on 6/28 around 2:03 p.m.

Robert Edward Raines, 34, of Leicester got into a woman’s unsecured, and unattended SUV and took her purse, according to the report.

The woman, Christine Braswell confronted Raines and he dropped the purse.

He then ran across the parking lot to try to get away.

Braswell then got in her SUV and chased Raines, eventually hitting him with her vehicle, according to police.

Raines was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Braswell was arrested and charged with Assault with Deadly Weapon.

Warrants have been issued for Raines for Breaking and Entering a Motor Vehicle, Larceny after Breaking and Entering a Motor Vehicle, and Damage to Property.

I am very mixed about this. She easily could have killed him. But as someone who has been robbed a few times (breaking and entering) I can understand wanting to avenge your self. I do know if I was ever victim of a holdup I would hand everything over with out fight. Nothing on me worth risking my life.

While I believe in the rule of law, I also believe that once someone commits a crime against you, they do so at the risk of immediate retribution. Order in civilized society is set not only by law, but by the level of behavior that will be tolerated by the society at large. I concur with her level of tolerance.

Personally, I say "you go girl!". Blame it on hormones due to pregnancy. ;)

I am guessing the 'deadly weapon' charge will be dropped. It's obvious that if she'd wanted him dead he wouldn't be in the hospital with minor injuries. I do rather like the pregnant woman/hormones defence.

A student at the high school tried that defence for her improper behavior. Didn't work with me, but I sure hope the momma to be gets off easy. She could'a been carrying. The robber got off lucky.

She will probably barter down to battery and get probation.
