So... we went a little crazy at Lowes today.... LOL

We got early blooming blue and white Iris, purple, yellow and white crocus, and pink hyacinth. For mid blooming we got blue hyacinths, pink tulips, and BRIGHT pink tulips. For late we got dark purple iris, and pink and yellow tulips. (I can get you actual names if you want.)

What we're trying to figure out is, what of these should be planted where to attract the most beneficials to our garden. We're planning on putting a fence around the garden area, but I don't want to start putting bulbs in the area before we get the fence in! LOL

Do you think that by planting the majority of them in the front and on the fruit side of the house (Other side of the yard from the garden) that they will attract beneficials for the garden?

Also... what kinds of bugs will these attract?

Iris do not seem to attract bugs of any kind. Your bright tulips may get some bees and hummingbirds. The Hyacinth will smell spectacular! I have seen bumblebees around hyacinths.

I know the honeybees will be so happy to find your crocus first thing in the spring, no matter where you put them. Crocus are also perfect for naturalizing. They bloom well before you have to start mowing, so you can plant them right in the lawn. Just take a handful, toss them up in the air and plant them where they fell. Over the years they'll multiply and spread, bringing you a big carpet of spring color, just when your eyes are most longing for it after a long, grey winter.

I actually, right after putting the last post up here, saw a very beautiful photo of Irises with Monarch butterflies all over it on my fb news feed. They were deep blue Irises.

I may just do that with a few of the crocus!! How great would it be to see some color right in the lawn!! Maybe plant some behind my blueberry bushes, around where we're thinking of putting the rhubarb and the sunflowers! Then some more could go between the pear and apple trees!! We've been thinking of getting some mason bees to help out with our garden and whatnot... maybe all the flowers would help us actually keep some around!! :p

I absolutely LOVE the Iris. It's so beautiful! It's only competition as far as beauty goes (In my opinion) is the Lilly. I just don't know where I'm going to put all these flowers without them looking out of place. My neighbor and I planted a TON of yellow daffodils under my crepe myrtle and around my mail box the last couple years, so there's not a whole lot of room right there, but I might be able to squeeze in a few, or maybe replace some and move the daffodils to another spot.

The names of the flowers we got are Blue Jacket hyacinths, Salmon impression Tulips (they came in a "collection" and look really nice together) and are mid bloomers. Pink blend hyacinth and are early blooming. Angelique & Freeman Tulips (They look like double blooms!!) and are late blooming. Large flowering crocus, of course, early blooming. Davy Jones bearded Iris, late blooming. (This is the dark purple one, it's really pretty!!) Pink Impression Tulip, mid blooming. (My daughter picked this one... LOL). And last but not least, Best Bed bearded Iris and it's early blooming.

I think Hubs and I have decided that around the outside of the front of the fence we're going to plant lots and lots of daisies. Those are my absolute most favorite flowers on the face of the planet!! He saw that Queen Anns Lace was also good for bugs, but I don't particularly care for that one. I think they smell funny and look weird. LOL

Husband "drew" our yard... it's not to scale at all... but here's what we have to work with

The ~ is the future fence. the ARB is the arbor. T is the crepe myrtle, W is the grapes, P pear, A apples, M mulberry, D ducks, C chickens, S strawberries, K compost, R is raspberries.

You really are going to have to drive your booty out here sometime. I have a TON of bulbs of all types and I need to split them again. I have 100's! I have many colors of iris, canna, tulip, crocus, mini daffs, hyacinth and more. I'll have to split you off some. :)

Which reminds me... its time to split some up for myself to spread around more.

I can say, the iris like it rocky with good drainage, so keep those away from places that don't drain well, and don't bury too deeply.
