last night I took a friend out for their birthday. When I picked her up she very proudly said I have a gift for you. I felt uncomfortable because she is a single mother on a very tight budget. Her gift was a plastic dog standing upright with sunglasses holding a beach umbrella with a fan in its middle !!! Not my style, I do appreciate the thought, I just hope she got it at a yard sale cheap and not a store. Fri my friends are meeting at my house to go to a show, so I must display this gift.

LOL, I have been the recipient of tacky gifts too. Is it something you can put in a hidden location in the yard and forget to bring it in next winter? Oops it broke, sort of thing. I finally got the concrete birdbath from my In-laws to break after leaving it out for SEVERAL winters. (And accidently tipping it over after a crack developed.)

Oh, you must have some other silly things you can sit the gift beside, don't you?

Come on, NyBoy. There are 1 or 2 things you have in a drawer that make you smile every time you see them. Then, as you think of anyone else catching sight of them, you are embarrassed. So, back they go in the drawer ... bring those out ;).

Don't make some grand display of the dog with the fan and umbrella, along beside your alligator with his cigar and cats playing poker. Set them over by the potted palm ... two, potted palms!

Steve :)

You can always take it to a thrift store very far away and say your visiting niece/nephew saw it and fell in love with it, took it home with them. Of course, she might just buy you another :)

Bless her heart, my mother has Alzhiemer's and has started buying me and my SIL what one might have worn disco dancing in the 70's. I have no idea where she finds this stuff. She gave me a black and white psychedelic shirt with sparkly bling all over it on one of my visits (I'm still vacuuming bling out of my car). To humor her I wore it the next morning because I knew I'd be driving in the car all day and no one I knew would see me. As I was waving goodbye out the car window she shouted what seemed like disapproval 'For goodness sake, don't stop and pick anybody up wearing that thing!' LOL.

I loathe and despise nic-nacs, "collectibles" and all doo-dads that need to be dusted. I have made it clear to friends and family. If they just have to get me something, make it a Tractor Supply gift card or grocery store gift card. TSC has all the things near and dear to my heart. Grocery gift card, go spend it, eat it, flush it away! AND NO DUSTING!!! LOL
