Anyone got a sure fire method of how to tell when they are ripe? It is starting to change colors. It isn't ripe yet but soon will be, I hope. Don't want to pick green nor do I want it to rot in garden. I've never grown them before and I seem to have found a vegetable that I'm good at as 3 small hills are loaded. The first one is fairly large as this is a early French variety.

seedcorn I planted honeydews for the first time last year and they grew very well. I ran into the same problem as you did. A local farmer near where I live told me to lightly thump the rind of the honeydew and listen for a deep dull sound when you thump it. If you get that sound and it's starting to change color it's time to pick it.

Same with watermelon- just hard to tell when they are perfect. And once you have cut into it- its too late to change your mind!
