What do they taste like?

Do they taste like a green Honeydew?

Do they taste like a Cantaloupe?

They look like an Asian melon and altho' the Asian melons are early enuf for my climate . . . their very mild flavor doesn't have much appeal to me. I find the Galia melon I grow to be quite similar to a Honeydew and don't know if I want to grow a Honeydew just because the color is different. Any experience with these? (Johnny's has some of these varieties.)

My friend's husband grew a field of the orange-fleshed honeydew melons several years ago. The ones he grew tasted like a regular honeydew. They were really good!

Steve,
I think the honeydews that are yellow and orange are still like the green honeydews they just have a different color. But they do still taste very much as a honeydew. So the only thing that is different is the color of the melons.

Thank you!

I am trying to find something different from the Passport Galia - which has been my fail-safe for about the last 7 years. It just always comes thru for me despite some very unpleasant springs that have even killed other melons. It makes some sense that it was developed at the University of New Hampshire from an Israeli line of melons .

However, Passport is very similar to a Honeydew.

The seed companies are continuing to develop melons that have earlier maturity. I have a few seeds of Santon Charentais. I gave that one such a difficult trial last year - it is a wonder all the plants didn't die in our Junuary weather! Without a very late October frost (is this the weird weather thread :/), Santon would never have produced any ripe fruits. They were really tiny and not up to Charentais standards, however.

~ Sigh ~ Maybe I should go back to the Asian melons. I know some of them will ripen. Look! TEG will even allow me to copy and paste the Japanese kanji: まくわうり ! You know -- There's more to gardening that just growing stuff ;). For me, TEG gardeners are a big part of the experience.

Steve :)

i know FedCo carries the yellow and the orange honeydews. i was going to try them last year but the plants never got to the garden. they stayed and survived in their pots most of the summer till i forgot to water them and they dried up. not my best gardening year. too many family issues came up and the season just became depressing with the crummy weather.
