Both of my dogs are 13yrs old this year. Rosie, the lab has been waking up multiple times during the night panting hard and pacing around the bedroom. Last week I moved her bed over under the window and opened it a crack. We've both been sleeping better since she's been getting a steady supply of cold air.
Has anyone ever heard of dogs having hot flashes??

No. Can't believe you got them to pose like that for pix.

They sit like that all the time. Rosie will sit down, then Gilligan will snuggle up against her. I guess his butt gets cold? He does that to me too. He'll sit on my feet with his back to me, then look up over his shoulder.. looking for back scratches, I think.

They have a much higher body tempter then us 102 103. I had a Russian Wolfhound that would lay across front door in winter, the breeze coming in under the door kept her comfortable in heated house.

I haven't heard of dogs having hot flashes, but I can totally empathize with Rosie!
Sometimes I just want to run outside and fling myself into the snow...

Larka (Bernese Mtn. dog ) gets uncomfortable when the temps hit 50. Yesterday she was lying on her back on a snowbank, letting it rain on her belly, completely blissful.
She likes to be in the house, but 20 minutes is about her comfort zone, then she starts panting. Wren, on the other hand loves nothing better than to be inside, snuggled up in the dog bed. She pretends she's invisible when you say it's time to go out.

Larka - Open the door and come out! We'll frolic in the snow!
Wren - Open the door and let me in, we'll hang out by the fire!

My sis's dog kind of acted like that when he had congestive heart failure. He would spend a lot of time on the AC vent in the floor. He and my dad were on the same medicine for a few years.
Both deceased now. :(

My Lab, also 13, is also doing a lot of panting. She's often asking to go out, but won't stay outside unless I'm out there shivering with her. So she's in and out like she has a revolving door to play with. Sigh

my corgi used to love laying in front of the outside door where there would be a small draft. now he seems to love being in front of the stove keeping his aching bones warm. he'll be 9 this May.

Cane, you have some beautiful dogs!!!! Many people online have the same question, so it's definitely a "thing" with older, female, spayed dogs. Women who have had all their reproductive parts removed also tend to have hot flashes during menopause, so I don't see why a dog can't have the same thing.

I couldn't find anyone asking the same question about their aging MALE dogs, so I think it's safe to say that it's a female issue and it's a definite possibility she's having hot flashes.

Did you know that medical experts still can't agree on what causes hot flashes in women~even the Mayo Clinic has no sure answers, let alone knowing if they would happen in a dog or not?

I'm betting if men had hot flashes there would be extensive studies on the subject and every resource would be exhausted in finding out the exact cause and in developing a treatment for it. ;)

Until then, I'd lean towards her aging hormonal system causing a deficiency here and there, leading to hot flashes, which are nothing more than a thermoregulation problem.
