Both my wife & I like asparagus, and have been working on a "long term plan" for the property. Where would this go when we can afford it, where would that go etc. trying to lay things out on paper so things that need to go in now can be placed & not have to me moved once they are in place (that's the hope at least).

Anyway I brought up asparagus & it's something we want to get established. Thing is I have no idea how big of a bed to make since I'm not sure once established what kind of yield to expect from planting ___number of crowns initially or ____ square feet of asparagus bed will give roughly ___ lbs of spears etc.

I know to do an all male variety, and initial spacing. I just don't want to be overrun with them either because I planted what seemed logical at the time turns out to be gigantic bed of asparagus.

So how did you do yours?

I have two areas that are about 5x10 each. There are two of us- and I could use a little more...However, we probably have asparagus everyday for a couple of weeks. Unless you really go crazy, I wouldn't think you could have "too much". The only thing I regret, is that I planted mine in a side yard -that is visible. In the early spring that is no problem- but when they fern out later on, it is not the most attractive thing. The stalks get really tall and often bend over in the wind, etc. I would recommend not having the bed front and center, for that reason. Until you have eaten asparagus out of your garden- you haven't eaten asparagus! Good luck!

I am no help here. We have LOTS of asparagus, but no idea how many crown, plants or sq. footage we have. I've no idea what the yield really is !!! We eat all we want, give bunches away to Mother-in-law and the kids. Dog helps himself when we are not looking, too! We had an established patch about 5 ft sq. when we bought the house. Now there is a patch along 2 fence lines out at the lot. Maybe a ft. or 2 wide and 6 or 8 feet long. Those are still fairly young patch. Oh and we supplement all that be stopping at wild patches in the roadside ditches when we see them. Hope someone else can answer better. Enjoy your asparagus. :drool

Mine is a 5 year old bed and still spreading. It is in a 5' X 10' raised bed. Right now there is never enough of my favorite spring veggie -- all is eaten fresh with none for freezing or canning. I think I started with two dozen roots when I started the bed.

I set out two different beds, 10 crowns each, in case one was in a better place than the other. I got them from Stark Bros. Jersey Knight and Purple Passion maybe six years ago.

When they are in season we eat asparagus every other day. Those two beds make plenty for us. The Jersey Knight outperforms the Purple Passion. I don’t know if that is location or if it just outperforms.

Thank you that's the suggestions I was after. Good to know about when it ferns out not being attractive. I thought I had a spot for it but Lesa your comments that changes things in a good way. It's all full sun here so I'll find a spot to tuck it in at.

We have one bed that has maybe 24 plants, 12 on each side with a row down the middle. That was just about perfect for the two of us with plenty for freezing and sharing.

The bed is getting older and overrun with blackberries and a horrible twining weed which we can not eradicate. DH and his tractor decided to start a new bed up in the field..... 250 plants! :ep
It should be interesting this spring!

Mine is 3' X 18'. I wish I would have started with fresh stock. I moved a bed. BAD idea.
