We planted some corn and we have no idea when to pick it. A critter has started stealing kernels on two cobs. I don't want them to get all of them! We only have 7 cobs!

Critters only eat it when it is at perfection. When the tassels are brown, when they feel fat when you squeeze them, and you can peel back a bit of the covering if your still not sure. I found mine were ripening very fast because of the very hot summer. They did not stay premium for very long. Usually they will hold in the garden for awhile. Watch that they don't get over grown before you pick and freeze the extra.

Hm, interesting. I planted real late and I guess they are already done. =D
Thanks.

I don't know where you are located, but I plant five different rounds of corn, starting a new crop every two weeks so I get fresh corn for a long time each summer. If you have room, it is a great way to do it. I like fresh corn.

A good way to check if the corn is ready is to peel back the shucks just enough to look at the kernels. If they are full, it's ready. You can poke a kernel with your fingernail. If a milky liquid comes out, it's at its prime.

I'm in VA, so zone 7a.

Picked the corn, MICE are eating it.

How do we stop them???

Had one massive cob with a joined twin to it. =D But it was not developed much. So exciting to plant next year!

Get a cat. Or get a trap, put poison where you think they live. (Barn?)

So how was the corn? Picked the first of my second crop tonight. So good-like candy.
