My first cantaloupes of the year! They just slid off the vine. My whole kitchen smells so sweet. Tonight I take my first bite!

I often tell my gardening friends that one of the main tests of a good gardener is if they can grow yummylicious full sized melons.

Yeah, well I ate my 1st melon from the garden today, too!

"Slid off the vine?" It was lucky this thing didn't slide off and under my foot. It might have gone unnoticed. Silly little thing was no more than a half pound, maybe . . . But, it was ripe - somehow.

Anyway, there are more of those "Goddess" 68-day melons on the vines. They are supposed to go 4 to 6 pounds but, so far, I've had barely a good taste :/!

Congratulations, Cathy! You did good!

Steve :)

My musk melons are already just about done. Boy, they are good. Unfortunately, they are in the "overgrown jungle" part of my garden. So, I have to tip toe around and dig in the leaves of the pumpkins, watermelons, cukes, and sweet potatoes to find them! You are right, that smell is heavenly!

I lift my melons up onto plant pots with holes in them to keep vermin from eating them. The holes keep them from standing in water and rotting. By lifting them up above the leaves they receive more sun and I think grow fatter. It was so sweet and still warm from the sun. I used to allow them to be engulfed in the jungle. I kept them well weeded this year and gave them a bit of their own space in the garden. Yummy!

Oh how you like to tease us poor mortal souls that can't grow melons! They are one of my favorite fruits and I'm sure homegrown are much better than store bought.

Very Nice melons Cat!! :thumbsup I bet they tasted amazing.

I wish I had some melons from the garden, I do have some Watermelons and even they are a challenge to grow up north.
Sometimes they form little baby watermelons, rot and fall off the vine, Not sure why this happens?

Here is what my watermelon looks like today: Do you guys think it will have time to mature before summer ends? I'm hoping Summer will hang around a little longer. If only this melon developed a few weeks ago it would have a better chance to harvest.

It is exciting though to see it almost double in size each day. Maybe it isn't too late for a watermelon harvest.
