The one with the waggety tail ? As reported on this evening's news ... There is this bleeding heart lady that recues dogs and cats in Tacoma, Washington that is asking law makers to ban the commercial sale of dogs and cats , "EXCEPT " from "adoptions" ( sales ) from the rescue groups . :somad Her plea is that she is only interested to stop the puppy mills from operating by eliminating their income from puppy sales. Yea, right :he This is the start of the end of the Purebred Dog breeding in this country as we know it. Are these so called rescue groups now trying to form a MONOPOLY on sale (er, adoptions ) of dogs and cats ? Just where are these rescue groups getting their dogs and cats from since there has been the push to spay and neuter dogs and cats for decades now ? Where is the AKC to stop this irrational preemtion of private enterprise ??? Where are all of the Show Dog People that will soon loose their livelyhood if and when this proposed law passes ??? :idunno :hu :caf

I think just because one woman is pushing for a new law doesn't mean it will be looked at seriously. I agree there are probably too many puppy mills, especially in Missouri, but maybe the laws need to be tightened elsewhere, and not prey on legitimate well intentioned breeders.

I love the idea or rescues. However, I am not going to take a chance on a cute but not so gentle dog from a rescue just because some other person turned in a dog that they ruined. Or take a weird mutt because someone did not neuter their pet. There are plenty of wonderful breeders out there. They are not all puppy mills. If you do your homework you should be able to get a dog from a good breeder.

Pet industry has always been a messy industry. As long as $$ to be made,it will continue. My problem is not the breeders but the people who buy not knowing history and people that don't spay their females thus allowing 2X litters/year of unwanted dogs, cats, etc.

In pounds around here, all dogs/cats are neutered before re-homed.

Bans on commercial sales of pets have already passed in several cities in CA, FL, and around the Chicago area (I think), more than 30. This has big business behind it, so I can see it spreading. Petco and Petsmart have partnerships with animal recue groups so they are not affected.
Lawsuits fighting the bans have also been filed in some cities.

I believe this only affects wholesale to commercial sales, not the small breeder that sells directly to the consumer. Some of the bans have exceptions to allow small breeders to sell to pet stores. I have not heard about any proposed bans around here, but they passed some legislation last year concerning stricter regulations and licensing. Problem is, coming up with the money for inspections and enforcement.

Personally, I don't think pets should be treated as agricultural crops. This industry has been so under regulated in so many states, it is no wonder their are so many terrible large breeders out there who's only concern is the mighty $.

Most pet shops around here don't sell dogs, cats or rabbits anymore, and are getting more into service related products or closing. As @catjac1975 said, there are a lot of good breeders out there. Smaller breeders must be concerned with protecting their reputation as a breeder, not just producing a bigger crop.

A former sister-in-law-in-law bought a cute little purebred Yorkie from a "breeder" paying about $500, from what I could glean. The dog is a runt, and incontinent. She has to keep diapers on it. Can you imagine? :barnie

Some of you folks have expressed doubts about one (or a very few) person/people being able to get idiotic/stupid laws passed... Allow me to remind you of,,,,,,,, 'Madalyn Murray O'Hair'! ! ! ! !
There are various spellings of her name... If you don't know who she was, shame on you; google or wiki her up and become aware of the depths of stupidity that politicians and voters (and Supreme Court Justices) can and will stoop...

Sam, I recently read a book about her (see thread titled The most hated woman in America) I do understand how much havoc she was able to wreak. I don't know why no one exposed her early in her "career" because most of her credentials were made up, and she embezzled money right and left. I think USA was pretty much caught with its pants down, allowing her to operate for so many years. I can only hope we have smartened up a bit by now. I think the only people who weren't afraid of her were Billy Graham and Larry Flint.
